Frequently Asked Questions
what is a doula?
As a birth doula, I provide non-judgmental support, along with evidence-based education, hands-on support during your labor inclduing comfort measures, and emotional support.
When should i hire a doula?
You can hire a doula whenever you want! Ideally, you want to hire a doula as early as possible so you have time to get to know them and are comfortable having them in your birthing space. Hiring towards the end of your pregnancy can be a struggle to find available doulas.
Does insurance cover Doula services?
Coverage for doula care is not yet routine among insurance companies. It's fortunately becoming more common. Many insurers now cover doula services. You'll want to call your insurance company to see if they’re one of them.
Will a doula support an epidural? Does a doula support a cesarean?
Doulas can support all variations of birth. Whether you want an epidural, a home birth, a birthing center birth, a cesarean, you name it. A doula’s role is not limited to only offering physical support for unmedicated births.
When hiring and interviewing your doula, make sure the doula provides support in your desired location and ask if they are comfortable supporting the type of birth you want. In some situations, such as cesarean, a doula may not be permitted to be in the room during the procedure. So, asking your doula what their procedure is for planned and unplanned cesareans is a good idea.
can doulas provide medical adviCe?
A doula does not give medical advice or perform any medical tasks. While it is beneficial for a doula to be knowledgeable about medical procedures, her job is not to make decisions for the client.
how are you protecting your clients during the pandemic?
I am fully vaccinated and I continue to wear a mask whenever interacting with clients in person.
Consultations are held virtually over Zoom as well as the first prenatal. Second prenatal can either be virtual or in person, depending on your comfort level.
I wear a mask the entirey of your birth and if I’m caring for you in the postpartum, I also wear a mask for the entirey of my time within your home.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POSTPARTUM DOULA AND A NANNY?
A postpartum doula is focused on the wellness of both the postpartum mother and the baby. They support the postpartum parent's physical and emotional healing in addition to helping with baby skills, such as bathing, diapering, swaddling, sleeping and breastfeeding.
DO DOULAS PROVIDE LACTATION SUPPORT?
A doula can assist with teaching you the basics of breastfeeding, assist with latching and positioning. If you have any breastfeeding concerns, we have a Certified Lactation Consultant that we work with and can refer you to.
